What is Giclee?
Giclee means to “Spray” or “Squirt”. It comes from the French term “Le Gicleur” and is sometimes referred as the “Iris” (Iris Prints). This digital method of Fine Art Printing refers to the way that a large format inkjet printer works applying ink to a surface such as canvas or paper.
The process of making Giclee Prints involves sophisticated high resolution digital scans of the artwork. Each reproduction is created individually with inks that drop in a micro fine mist of minute droplets, capturing the true color (full color spectrum) and the finest nuances of the original artwork.
Giclee prints connote an elevation in printmaking technology using archival pigmented-inks to create excellent image stability. These types of prints are the most beautiful and accurate. The colors are brighter, details are crisper and overall quality is superior compared to most common commercial prints like lithography. Also, litho prints are usually mass produced in editions of 1000 or more, all at once; but giclee hardly ever exceed 200 high-quality reproductions, one at a time.
Giclee are the best prints alternatives at a fraction of the price of an original painting. They are desirable by collectors, fine art galleries, furniture stores, interior designers, among others; for their fidelity, quality and longevity.
